Youth Alcohol Abuse: A Critical Problem

Alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol addiction consultants emphasize the point that wine, beer, and liquor ads constructed by the media are a primary reason for the proliferation of teenage alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol addiction authorities assert that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of wine, beer, and liquor in our society.

Still other alcohol dependency experts stress the point that more than a few of our teens engage in harmful drinking due to the increased stress that they live through.

From a somewhat different viewpoint, since both parents in quite a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance unquestionably has to play a primary role in the expansion of teenage alcohol abuse. And as a final point, diverse alcohol addiction experts emphasize the point that the proliferation of youth alcohol abuse is due, to some extent, to our “anything goes” society.

Coping Skills and Abusive Drinking

One element of youth alcohol abuse that looks like it is under reported in the substance abuse research results, then again, is the nonexistence of educational programs that teach students how to augment their coping skills so that their destructive drinking behavior is substantially decreased or eradicated.

Stated another way, scientific research has uncovered the fact that there is an indirect relationship between poor coping skills and hazardous drinking. Basically, this means that the worse the coping skills, the higher the rate of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a truthful argument, why isn’t coping skills education an essential part of the educational curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

A Society That Highlights Youth Coping Skills

Let us construct a scenario for for the purpose of elucidation. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to achieve high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school.

In such a society, when life gets difficult, students who are ”coping skills experts” will be able to respond in a more healthy and more successful way, as opposed to others who fail to execute their coping skills.

Stated more precisely, students who display excellent coping skills will be more able to think proactively and demonstrate top-shelf decision making as opposed to teens who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to implement first-rate coping skills, are drawn to the “quick fix” of excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above “ideal” society, moreover, if teenagers not only obtained exclusive coping skills instruction but also obtained a top shelf education that underscored the long term and short term harmful costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of drug and alcohol abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills education, it is proclaimed, would help teens avoid the noticeable attraction with teen drinking and, as a consequence, would substantially reduce the destructive drinking behavior exhibited by the youth in our country.

Teen Alcohol Abuse: Conclusion

There are obviously numerous defensible reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a harmful manner. Such a complex problem demands a far-reaching and relevant preventative and educational response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our youth can learn how to cope with life’s predicaments in a more rewarding and responsible way rather than gravitating to injurious drinking behavior to solve their problems.
