What You Need to Know About Vitamin B12 (Video)

  • Sharebar

What is Vitamin B12 and why is it so important to our health? Vitamin B12 is a group of water soluble “corrinoids” also known as “cobalamins” available only from animal products and by products. There are no plant sources of B12, although traces have been found in seaweed and brewers yeast. Those people on a vegetarian diet need to supplement with this vitamin to maintain good health, especially those on a strict vegan diet who consume no eggs, milk or fish.

Vitamin B12 is essential for the formation of red blood cells and can also prevent certain nerve disorders. Unlike certain other water soluble vitamins (for example Vitamin C), the human body can store long term supplies of B12.

Apart from vegetarians, vitamin B12 deficiency can be found in people with low stomach acidity as B12 is extracted from dietary protein by the action of hydrochloric acid. There are also certain digestive disorders that interrupt B12 absorption. What happens when you don’t get enough B12? You can develop a condition known as “pernicious anemia”, which, put simply, is a lack of red blood cells. Since these blood cells are needed to transport oxygen to the cells, pernicious anemia can cause a host of health problems including persistent tiredness and lack of energy.

40% of Americans have B12 deficiency. Vegans have a smaller percentage. B12 is created by a bacteria. The bacteria is in the air, water and dirt. Animal products have B12 yes, but heat at a temperature about 100 F destroys ALL OF IT!!!

Some people have a strong enough constitution that their large intestine can still hold and culture the bacteria that creates B12, but many of us don’t (approx 40%).

Vegans have lower percentage because they get less COOKED B12. Cooked B12 in animal products…

Great stuff! I sure am thankful for rise in natural medicine. The next thing we have to do is get some federal laws changed so that health care providers can’t discriminate against alternative medicines.

Interesting. I have been a veg for 16 years (took a year off and am back on) and I have always taken B12 sublingually. Many vegetarians and vegans do not take B12 supplementation seriously enough. Thank you for this
