When you consider just how far in home teeth whitening products that we take for granted now, have advanced from their rather modest origins, it can make you really  thankful for what you do not have to put into your mouth simply to get a bright white smile. Although it may seem that way, we have not always had products such as brushed on bleaching gels, whitening toothpastes or whitening strips available. Before the oral healthcare marketplace grew into the major industry that it is now, getting that elusive smile was not always such a straightforward job.

These days, most of us know that brushing our teeth twice a day or after meals is the first step in home teeth whitening. To do that, we turn to our dependable toothbrush to get rid of any surface buildup on our teeth. Everyone has a toothbrush readily available but what would you do if you could not find yours. You would go outside into your front or back yard naturally and find yourself a suitable twig. In times gone by, folks would actually chew on sprigs in order to clean their teeth. After that, some clever individual, way back in history, had the smart idea of fashioning a piece of wood and adding wild boar bristle to the end of it. And so the toothbrush was born although the idea of having a mouthful of hog hairs first thing in the morning is not too appealing.

The demand to have whiter teeth is by no means the latest fashion craze since it has been around for many years. In times gone by, the local barbers shop would also be the place to go if you needed anything done to your teeth. To give you the brilliant white teeth that you desired, the barber come dentist would file the tooth surface down and then apply a Nitric Acid solution. While this process would certainly work in the short term, the teeth would begin decaying rapidly due to the lack of tooth enamel protection that would be destroyed by the process.

Think of that fresh minty taste of your toothpaste. Most whitening toothpastes nowadays include baking soda as an active component. It is still a common practice to brush the teeth with bicarbonate of soda straight out of the Arm & Hammer packet. If you do not want that baking soda taste, then you may want to stick with toothpaste. At least it no longer includes urine, which was a common component in the 1800′s.

If it is said once, it will be said a hundred times over your lifetime. Home teeth whitening all starts with following a proper oral hygiene routine. Avoiding tobacco products, red wine and drinks such as coffee and tea are also good ideas if your goal is to have pearly whites. Do not take for granted how simple it is for modern man to have whiter teeth. At least you do not have to brush with a toothbrush made of pig hair.
