Vitamin B – The B Complex Vitamins

Thiamine is a vitamin, also called vitamin B1. It is generally found in yeast, cereal grains, beans, nuts, and meat. Thiamine is part of the vitamin B group also known as B complex which is composed of the following: Vitamin B1 or thiamine, vitamin B2 or riboflavin, vitamin B3 or niacin also niacinamide, vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid, vitamin B6 or pyridoxine, vitamin B12 or cyanocobalamin, and folic acid. Thiamine is termed Vitamin B1 since basically it is the 1st B vitamin that was identified. It used to be termed aneurin for the detrimental neurological results of its lack in the diet, and then was finally called vitamin B1 as its generic descriptor.

Insufficient intake of vitamin B1 leads to beriberi affecting the peripheral nervous system and/or the cardiovascular system, with potentially fatal outcome if not cured with thiamine administration. Vitamin B1 is also used for digestive troubles like inadequate appetite for food, ulcer and diarrhea. It is also applied for AIDS and boosting the immune system, diabetic discomfort, heart disorder, alcoholism, aging, cerebellar syndrome (a type of brain disorder), vision problems such as cataracts and glaucoma, motion illness, canker sores, and increasing athletic performance.

Other folks use it to protect against cervical cancer and progression of kidney ailments in patients with type 2 diabetes. Some also use thiamine to retain a good mental attitude. They also believe that thiamine enhances understanding abilities, increases awareness, and prevents memory loss which includes Alzheimer’s disease. Nevertheless, most of the latter claims are nonetheless subject to scientific analysis.

The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) is a brain injury characterized by memory impairment and nerve pain. It mostly damages the central and peripheral nervous system.
