Understanding The Problem Of Bedwetting

  • Sharebar

Many young children suffer from bedwetting, leaving their parents wondering how to cope with the problem. The proper medical name for wetting the bed is enuresis.  It occurs most often in children who are making the transition from wearing a nappy to sleeping without one, as they get used to potty training. But there is no need to worry if the problem persists – many solutions exist to put an end to it.

Parents must always make sure that the child isn’t punished in any way when the bedwetting occurs.Bedwetting occurs when the child is unable to wake up in time to visit the toilet in the night.  Telling them off can actually make the problem a lot worse, because stress in itself can be the reason behind the problem. But stress isn’t the only reason for bedwetting; enuresis can be caused by medical problems as well.

Another way of helping children to naturally resolve any bedwetting issues is to make sure that they get into the habit of going to the toilet just before bed each night.Make sure you consider how old your child is though; if you are potty training then simply revert to nappies during the night.Older children can also start wetting the bed, and if this is the case it’s worth reducing the amount they drink before they go to sleep for the night. What works for one child may not work for another, so keep trying if you don’t succeed the first time.

Of course be alert to any physical problems that could be a cause for the bedwetting, so they can be resolved. One sign of infection of the urinary tract is pain upon passing water, so watch out for any signs like this.If it is an infection, proper treatment will solve the problem of bedwetting. In other situations bedwetting alarms work well; the child will be woken if they do wet the bed.

In the end a positive attitude is highly beneficial to the child, no matter what the reason for the bedwetting might be.If the child’s bedwetting upsets them, a poor attitude from the parents towards the situation makes things worse and prolongs the problem. There are lots of ways to resolve the problem, regardless of whether you need to let it play out or intervene. In the end most children will eventually be able to sleep all night and not wet the bed, as the problem will be no more than a temporary one.
