The Lowdown on Lower Back Pain Causes

You’re going about your day when a painful spasm hits, causing you to stop short and rub that area just above your hips. Lower back pain strikes again. This is a condition that far too many people deal with in their day-to-day routines. And a lot of them don’t understanding the exact cause of their pain.

Muscle strain is a frequent culprit in causing lower back pain. So what’s actually taking place? Basically you do too much or lift too much for too long a time. The end result is that your lower back muscles get pulled in directions they’re not used to moving in.

Most often, this is not a serious injury. However, you’ll have to restrict your movements considerably for a while. Stock up on ice and find a comfortable place to lay down.

Similar to muscle strains, a lumbar sprain is a frequent cause of lower back pain. But unlike a strain, lumbar sprains can be much more painful, because it’s a result of the ligaments being torn. Ligaments are like the supporting stay cables on a suspension bridge. If one of the cables breaks, the bridge suddenly becomes less stable and reliable.

For women, painful cramps during their menstrual cycle and premenstrual syndrome can be a cause of lower back pain. In the later months of pregnancy there is also increased pressure on your vertebrae and spine. This leads to pinched nerves and quite a bit of discomfort. Endometriosis is another health issue for women that many times will be made worse by pain in the lower back area.

Not stretching your muscles throughout the day can also cause upper back pain. Just by doing a few stretches for your back and arms once a day you can make huge strides towards a healthier spine. By exercising the back muscles, you can give them a lot of pain relief, particularly if your job involves a lot of repetitive movements.

The causes of lower back pain can be a myriad of different possibilities, from muscle strain to sciatic nerve problems. Make an appointment with your doctor to get a diagnosis through an examination and perhaps some further testing.

You can’t be too cautious when it comes to back pain treatment, and it can cause even worse issues if you ignore it. You can do a lot of damage just by waiting even a few weeks. As the saying goes, better safe than sorry.
