Does Teenage Insomnia Lead to Depression?

  • Sharebar

Recent studies have found teenage insomnia may lead to depression and substance abuse. This may well be but what is unknown is whether the insomnia itself caused the depression, or if there was something in the personality of the teenagers involved that led to both problems.

A highly anxious teen may experience insomnia and the anxiety could lead to both depression and abuse of alcohol or drugs. People use drugs and alcohol to numb their feelings and troubled teenagers have no trouble finding supplies of these substances.

The trouble is the teenage brain lacks the maturity to make good decisions where their mental health is concerned leading to long term problems with both depression and insomnia.
