Swine Flu Virus Information, The Simple Precautions That Should Be Taken And The Treatments Available

  • Sharebar

Today we are more at a greater risk from the various mutations of the flu virus than we have been for a very long time. First we had alarms over bird flu, but now swine flu has manifested as a major concern. Swine flu is of more concern than bird flu. It was a worry that bird flu may mutate into a strain that might become infectious in humans, thankfully, apart from a few cases, this has not materialized so far.

Swine flu is of much more concern, it has the ability to spread between humans which makes it an extremely serious health problem.  Swine flu or influenza A (H1N1) is a flu virus that infects pigs. Outbreaks of swine flu in pigs does not normally infect people although it can happen sometimes.

Swine flu is a unknown type of virus and is therefore particularly dangerous. This means that no one has been in contact with this particular strain previously, which means no one has developed any immunity to this particular strain. With no built in immunity a disease is life threatening, as our body is unable to defend against the virus. Absolutely everyone is susceptible, this includes healthy adults as well as children and senior citizens.

Swine flu can easily result in a pandemic influenza situation. A pandemic flu situation occurs when an influenza viral strain develops that is very different from previous flu strains that very few, if any, people have any immunity to. This allows the flu virus to spread widely and rapidly throughout the population.

Pandemic flu differs from seasonal flu as detailed below.  Seasonal influenza occurs yearly during the winter, 10 to 15 percent of the population will be infected and most people will recover within one to two weeks with no treatment. seasonal flu is usually only risky to the elderly and people with conditions that make them more vulnerable to serious complications from an infection.

Pandemic influenza affects many more people, up to half the population can be affected, pandemic flu is far more serious, people of all ages may be infected.

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to the symptoms of seasonal influenza. Symptoms include sudden onset of a fever, cough or shortness of breath. Symptoms that may also be present may include headaches, sore throat, muscle aches, sneezing, chills, a runny nose, appetite loss and tiredness.

Precautions that can be taken. First, anyone showing flu or cold symptoms needs to take a few easy, but very important precautions. The flu virus is spread between people by the small droplets from the mouth and nose when someone sneezes or coughs. This is the way viruses such as swine flu are spread among the population. Using your hands when you cough or sneeze is not enough. The virus simply sit on your hands, then everything you touch afterwards becomes contaminated with germs. Anyone who the touches the same surface will pick up the virus and become infected. Therefore, always use a handkerchief or disposable tissue. A tissue is better, this should be disposed of as soon as possible, try to always use a new tissue if you cough or sneeze again.

A vaccination against swine flu is not available. The vaccination for ordinary influenza is ineffective against swine flu. By the time a vaccination is discovered, it can take many months to manufacture, by which time the virus may have mutated again making a new vaccination possibly ineffective.

The only real effective precaution against swine flu is Tamiflu. Tamiflu isn’t guaranteed to prevent flu, but after someone has been exposed to another individual who has the swine flu virus, it can help to stop the virus making you ill. If Tamiflu is administered in the first 2 days of getting the flu virus, it will help to stop the virus spreading throughout the body, reducing the symptoms and the risk associated with the virus. Governments are stockpiling Tamiflu, but these supplies will naturally be used to treat key workers before the population at large.

You can buy Tamiflu online, so if the situation occurs you can give as much protection as possible to yourself and family. Although it cannot be emphasized enough, Tamiflu needs to be taken as soon as is possible to be effective, delays in treatment will diminish how effective Tamiflu is.

Remember, swine flu is a worldwide problem. Should an outbreak become global it is a possibility that the supplies of Tamiflu may become low and may possibly not meet a massive worldwide demand.  Until a vaccine is found and produced in the quantities needed, Tamiflu is the most effective treatment for swine flu, it would sensible to buy Tamiflu beforehand if you feel you could be at risk.
