The FDA made a decision just recently which I think is mind boggling (even for them!) It has back-flipped on it’s previous warning on mercury contaminated fish. This includes consumption by pregnant women, nursing mothers and infants.
There are well documented dangers of high mercury levels in pregnancy. Mercury can damage the nervous systems as well as major organs such as the eyes, kidneys and lungs. The developing fetus is especially vulnerable to mercury poisoning.
A fetus may die in the womb from excess mercury. An infant exposed to high levels of mercury may suffer brain damage.
Pregnancy, fish and mercury
The main source of mercury is fish and seafood. Once thought to be a healthy food, fish absorbs mercury found in seawater in certain parts of the world. It’s possible to find mercury-free fish of course but where? And how can you be sure?
Some very astute minds have worked out why the FDA has revoked it’s stand on mercury in fish. They declare that the FDA is under pressure to state that mercury is safe in vaccines and dental fillings. Stating mercury contaminated fish is safe to eat really makes us feel “so much better” about our metal filled teeth, doesn’t it?
