Lymphatic Drainage Therapy Techniques With Video

What is a lymphatic system and why do we need lymphatic drainage?

The lymphatic system removes proteins, water and toxins from cells and takes it back to the bloodstream. The lymphatic system can also assist cells to resist viruses. It does this through a network of tubes, similar to blood vessels called lymphatics, that move a clear fluid or “lymph” around the body. This is similar to our circulatory system except the lymphatic system has no “pump” to move it around, it relies on breathing and body movement.

Lymphatic drainage is a therapy using massage to help move the lymph around the body. It is more of a preventative health therapy than anything, but is a pleasant, relaxing experience even if not totally necessary! A lymphatic massage focuses on lymph nodes and uses rhythmic hand movements to help the movement of lymph around the body.

Probably the best way to ensure the lymph system is working well is to exercise. Just simple walking can produce enough muscle movement to ensure good lymphatic flow. However lymphatic massage can help and is really good if you suffer with stress or feel overworked or anxious. Lymphatic drainage therapy is also beneficial for sore muscles and some therapists claim it can help boost white blood cell count and prevent lymphederma, a blockage of the lymph system.
