Keep Yourself In Shape This Winter

  • Sharebar

As winter quickly approaches and summer seems a distant memory, it’s time to get ready to prepare for winter. And while it’s easy to start thinking about the essentials – clothing and making sure the heating comes on at a specific time, it’s also important to start thinking about how you can maintain your health during the winter season.

With shorter days and less hours of sunshine, it’s easy to become depressed in winter. With everything bleak and grey, it’s no wonder that so many people – particularly those in Northern Europe, Canada and Alaska, suffer for Seasonal Affective Disorder or – ironically – SAD.

This ailment, which seems to be affecting more and more people, is caused by a lack of sunshine and in turn a lack of D. Many people combat SAD with light therapy, ultraviolet B lamps which mimic the effects of sunshine and reduces the effects of SAD.

Another area to watch out for during this time is the food you eat. While salads are popular in the summer, winter dishes are typically bulky and warm – pickmeups to warm your body from the cold outside. And while these meals are delicious and indeed something to look forward to, it’s important to remember to continue to eat as much fresh fruit and veg as possible.

It’s also important to keep on exercising. While it’s easy to go for a job in the morning before work during the summer – or during the evening if you’re not the early bird – this motivation doesn’t come so easily during winter. After all, mornings are typically cold and dark and the bed – which you have spent many hours carefully warming – if far more inviting and comfortable.

If you cannot bring yourself to get up and go for a run in the mornings or in the evenings, it may be wise to invest in a gym membership, at least just for the winter months. Joining a gym can be a great motivation to keep fit – after all if you’re paying for it, there’s definitely a push to keep using the facilities as much as possible.

Shop around for the best deals. Although most people join the gym in January – as part of their New Year’s resolutions and post-Xmas guilt – many gyms run promotions before the New Year to attract new business before the January rush.

Keeping fit and healthy during winter will not only keep your body in shape but will also benefit you in other ways such as positively boosting your mood and maybe even helping to cut down on the costs of health or life insurance. Ignoring the financial aspects of life cover, a healthy heart and a healthy mind are two of the best things you can offer your body and your family this winter.

So this winter, don’t get depressed and shun the world. Get active, get healthy and enjoy the coming winter months.
