How Should I Stop My Child’s Sleep Walking?

  • Sharebar

As long as they aren’t harming themselves or others I would let them walk. Disturbing them in the midst is oftentimes dangerous. If they sleepwalk as children they usually grow out of it.

To my knowledge, they only option you have is to make the environment safe to protect them from accidents, and wake them up when you find them and bring them back to bed. As a sleep walker myself, I find that I only sleep walk when I am overtired, so I would recommend trying to make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep time. It’s a sick cycle because the sleep walking reduces your rest, which causes you to sleep walk more. Tip: In my experience, I have been known (many, many, many times!) to tell someone who is trying to wake me up and asking “are you awake now?” that I am in fact awake–only to really wake a few moments later. I have often argued with my husband (and before him a roommate) getting angry that he is asking me if I’m awake or not and telling him “yes” that I’m awake, when I am in fact still asleep. Sleep walkers can often carry on a conversation so don’t assume that if your sleep walker is chatting and says they are awake now that they are–keep an eye out until they return to bed (or you may find odd surprises around the house the next morning! lol ). Good luck to you!

When I was a kid I used to sleep walk into the kitchen and rearrange all of the pots and pans. Now that I look back on it, it’s funny. But at the time my parents worried about me hurting myself with God knows what. You might want to talk to a pediatrician. Sleep walking is a sign of something but I can’t remember what. We had just moved 600 miles when I started sleep walking; has your child had any drastic changes in his/her life recently?
