I am suffering from severe insomnia. I went to the doctor to see if I could get a prescription to help me sleep. She refused to give me anything and she just told me to take some unisom. What should I do?

Hello,
What is causing your insomnia? Stress? Caffeine? Naps during the day? TV in the bedroom? Exercising before going to bed? Don’t know?
Taking hypnotics, although helpful at first, only lead to dependency and money out of your pocket.
Correcting the above may help. Benadryl can also help if taken at night, but do not use for more than 10 days at a time. Ultimately, find out what is causing you to not sleep and correct it.
Loads of things could have caused your insomnia and you should try and find the root of the problem and combat it. Are you stressed? etc

As well as this you can try;
* Relaxation before bed, meaning no tv, computer, no loud music and minimise distractions as it is known to make your brain more active rather than relaxed
*Hot bath before bed
*Hot drink before bed
Also routine is mean to help, having regular bedtimes and wake-up times creates structure.
Psychologically prepare yourself for bed, because i find that worrying about it or saying that you cannot sleep often makes it worse

See a different doc. I’ve had insomnia for over 40 years. It began when I was 16. I am now 57. My “sleep clock” is broken. My insomnia story is at http://www.fms-help.com/insomnia.htm A list of things I’ve tried for sleep (unisom was one of them) is at http://www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm A list of things I use now is at http://www.fms-help.com/what.htm I do get restorative sleep almost every night now, thanks to a caring doc who worked with me to find the right meds for my problem. (Doctor of internal medicine) Insomnia can wreck your health and immune system. Find a better doc! My guess is that your doc doesn’t have this problem so doesn’t understand. My doc has to take sleep meds himself, so he understands. I always take the least amount of any med to get a positive effect and avoid any unpleasant side effect, such as next day drowsiness. Use a pill splitter (cheap gadget from Walmart or any pharmacy).
