How Much Does Your 4-5 Year-old Child Sleep?

Our 4-1/2 year old wants to stay up so late at night…. He will be exhausted and fighting sleep during his bath (~7:45 PM), but then gets his second wind and is up until 9:30-9:45 PM. He wakes at ~7:15 AM and he does nap 1+ hrs at preschool during the day… No child is typical, but is anyone else getting the sense that their child needs more sleep but will not…?

    I wish my kids would sleep 12 hours! lol
    My 5 year old still naps sometimes, but sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he’s in bed at 9:30, and sometimes not until 10:30. If he and his sister are really revved up we don’t bother trying to make them lay right down at 9:30.
    They both wake up at about 8AM, no matter what time they went to bed. I suppose that makes it between 9.5 & 10.5 hours of sleep at night, sometimes with an hour nap during the day.
    Have you tried making his bath a little later? If he gets sleepy in the bath maybe you could move it back to 8:30-ish and then try putting him right to bed after so he’s out by 9.
    I do think my 3 year old could get more sleep. She fights it hard, and we put her in her room, but she’ll sit up there and play and sing forever sometimes instead of settling, and then she’s exhausted and crabby the next day.

    Hello::
    My Daughter is 5 years old, and she is also a afternoon Kindergardener also!! Plus her daddy works all darn day!!
    That works for him and I, just not so much her!! He has two jobs and the second one lets out after 12 midnight! SO he is home only at the early mourning, for the first job starts at 8 am!!
    So My daughter gets dinner at 6 pm, two shows till 7:30 pm, then bath till 8 pm, and she just plays in her room til about 9 pm, for I am usally doing other things, or watching a show on tv, a break for a while!
    Then we lay down by 9:30 pm and when the alarm (home alarm, beeps when door opens) sounds, she gets up about 12:30 am, and spends time with her daddy, maybe 30 mins, and some times a drink and snack!! For he is eating, dinner ::)))!!!!
    I just find that when it comes to Mourning time, at about 10 am she is still tired, School starts at 11:05 am, and she gets out at 3 pm,
    Some times she naps in the afternoon in the car, so I know people are going to say she is not getting rested and that is why, but she needs time with daddy, and yet to be honest it works for OUR family!!
    So just try and see, to boot my daughter is on the A honor roll and she has the Citizenship Award for her grade, only one other kid got that with her!!
    SO things work, just try!!

    any way you can get him to bed a little earlier? i have found that if my son is fighting sleep and i keep him up past this point – I have the hardest time getting him to bed, he is too overtired at that point and revved up. If you cant, just work with what you have. his sleep doesnt sound too crazy,more is always better but it is such a hard thing to control.
    Try to cut TV down at night, read with dim lights on – maybe even lay down with him until he falls asleep? Good luck!

    They’ll sleep when they really need it. My son sleeps about 9-10 hrs a night. He is in kindergarten now so no naps. He would sleep less at night if he took a nap though. Say a 2 hr nap, usually meant at least 1 hr less of sleep at night.
