Choosing the Right Method To Quit Smoking

  • Sharebar

If you smoke then the probability is that you want to quit as the majority of smokers do. It can seem strange to think that so many people start smoking when so many smokers want to give up. There is a huge market for smoking cessation products as the majority of smokers end up eventually wanting to quit. Unfortunately that also means a huge market for scam products too. Whenever you come across a product that sounds like it is trying to promise more than it can deliver, be alert because it may well be a scam.

Here are some quit smoking methods that you could consider trying when you decide that you are ready to quit smoking.

Laser Therapy
Hypnosis (either with a therapist or through self hypnosis)
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)
Acupuncture
NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) such as patches or gum.
Doctor Prescribed Drugs
Cold Turkey
Herbal Medicine
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, a form of self acupressure)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Various Ebooks (these usually are NLP, CBT, Self Hypnosis etc)

That’s quite a choice and in order to help you make your choice you should consider the following factors.

Cost : Will the money you save on cigarettes cover the cost of your smoking cessation therapy sessions or products. The chances are it probably will, if you’re successful that is. Most of the methods listed above can easily have their costs met by the money saved from not buying cigarettes. Laser therapy can be costly however.

Belief: If you don’t believe that you are going to be successful at quitting smoking then you are going to be making things harder for yourself. If you try using a method that you don’t believe will work then your doubts could undermine the chances of it working. This is more applicable to any technique that uses the power of your mind to help you quit such as self hypnosis or NLP where your beliefs might work against you.

Be Prepared:Know what’s in store for you before you start. Cold Turkey for instance is likely to have unpleasant side effects such as anxiety. Can you cope with that? If not then perhaps a different method would work better for you.

Is this the first time that you have tried to quit? If not, how did you manage to quit last time? If you managed to quit for any length of time, then why not try the same method again. Substituting your smoking habit with something healthier will make it easier for you to keep off the cigarettes for good. Maybe working out in a gym perhaps. Getting yourself back into shape will make you less likely to want to smoke again.

Be aware that everybody is different, so what works for another person may not necessarily work for you. So if at first you don’t succeed with one method, then try another. One method is bound to work for you. If you are finding it difficult then any method that can alter your beliefs about smoking might help you, so consider hypnosis, NLP or EFT etc. Just don’t give up, the rewards for quitting smoking are too good for that.
