Make the Switch to Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy – Here’s Why

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is natural HRT

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy simply means the hormones in the treatment have a similar molecular structure as the hormones they are replacing. Bioidentical hormones are better tolerated and absorbed by the body so that they can better perform the functions they are designed for.

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (or BHRT) is normally referred to as a treatment to prevent the unpleasant symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings, reduced libido, weight gain and insomnia. It contains the hormones oestrogen, in the form of estriol, and progesterone, either separately or in combination. Sometimes testosterone is also included where necessary. Natural HRT can be in the form of a lozenge, injection, cream or suppository. The lozenge is the most popular and is usually placed under the tongue or the side of the cheek until it dissolves. This provides better absorption into the bloodstream.bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

Standard, or synthetic, hormone replacement therapy became popular in the 1960s, largely due to demand by baby boomers yearning to be “young forever”. It was touted as a miracle youth drug and was primarily distributed as oestrogen on it’s own. Ten years later synthetic progesterone was added as it was discovered that oestrogen alone intensified the risk of uterine cancer.

The addition of progesterone however brought further risks, such as breast cancer and heart disease. The medical profession tend to downplay the risks, saying they are very small. However, even a small risk is hardly worth taking, especially for a non-essential medication.

As women became concerned about the risks, they stopped taking synthetic HRT. However the hot flashes and other uncomfortable menopausal symptoms soon returned. It became a choice of which was the lesser of the two evils, unpleasant menopausal symptoms or risk of developing cancer. The advent of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy now gives us a third choice.

Synthetic hormone replacement therapy is manufactured primarily from the urine of pregnant mares. Not a problem – if you’re a horse. Big problem if you’re not!

The health benefits of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is made from plants, mainly the wild yam or soy. It is generally tailored for use by individual women based on such factors as body weight, known health risks, medical history and blood test results. Pharmacies who distribute these medications usually keep in touch with their customers over a long period of time to establish whether they are experiencing any symptoms of menopause, whereby the dose can be adjusted.

Conflicting advice on  bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

Although many doctors are advising their patients to stop taking synthetic HRT, some still insist the benefits outweigh the risks. It’s all rather unnecessary when you consider bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is now widely available. The main gripe some doctors have against natural hormone replacement therapy is that it’s not been approved by the FDA. Dear me! It sounds like there are some vested interests at work here. Well fortunately women are not stupid and can make their own judgements.

I have been taking bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for almost two years and can’t recommend it highly enough.
