My wife is convinced that she has ADD. While I don’t believe in it – there is no scientific evidence that it exists – I want to support my wife. However I can’t see her going on a medication like ritalin or other add drugs which have been compared to cocaine and/or actual methamphetamines.
So I would like to recommend to her some diet changes and other lifestyle changes that I know help with her actual issues AND are said to improve ADD. But also I think she is wanting to try drug therapy and I would like to be able to offer her an alternative to that which we could both feel good about.
So my question is: Do any of you take any natural remedies for adult ADD? I want to know if they are effective but more importantly are they safe. I am wondering from health professionals or people who have had these recommended or approved by their health care provider if these things are safe.
Specifically one called “Attend”.
Please don’t try to convince me to try Ritalin & thanks in advance.

Fish oils are a great help but also look into some B vitamins. I also use essential oils to combat mine. Peace and Calming, Cedarwood, Clarity are a few I bounce around with.
This is just one alternative you could try. (VALERIN) which calms the nerves system. Do not mix St. John Wart with Valerin, its has an opposite effect. St. John is called the Happy pill and is depression..
Upon retiring you may also take a soothing bath, with essential oils (Lavender is a good one) A few drops should do this.. anywhere between 10 to 15.
Also upon retiring for the night you can have a cup of warm tea: Either Chamomile, Thai or Green Tea.
Other than these alternatives.. a Med that is now being subscribed is Paxil or Konispin.(not sure of the spelling on the Konispin)
An added plus is to dextox the body first, by proper diet.
A good alternative herb tea such as Dandelion.
Hope this helps~
I have read on the Mercola website as well as several others, that the most important supplement for MS is omega 3 fatty acids. You can find omega3′s in foods such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption. Another one is flax oil and flax seeds. Most people’s diets are high in meat and other omega 6 oils which throw off the balance of omega 3s and omega6s. It is essential for most people to add foods containing these essential fatty acids. Here are a couple links below. Good luck to you and to your wife! Have a great day!
Unless she is a doctor, she could only suspect she has ADD/ADHD. A doctor will interview her and you and most likely give forms for her parents to fill out about what she was like as a kid. ADHD does not develop nor does it go away. If she has it now then she had it then.
You don’t believe in it because you don’t have it and have not gone looking for the scientific evidence. They now have tests with nuclear medicine that prints it out in color for you. I’m going to assume that you don’t believe your wife has it.
If you want to support her then let her go get a diagnosis…don’t worry about the treatment yet.
Ritalin (in its prescribed form for treatment of ADHD) is to cocaine & meth as light is to lightning. This is another testament that you have listened to only what you want to hear.
Yes, I too thought a magic pill could cure me but I learned that the best treatment of ADHD is to treat the inside brain chemistry and outside environment. The right meds when found will help me change the outside environment (also known as coping skills). For example, I never volunteer to take notes for the group and always have to have a PDA/smartphone and notepads around. Sometimes it takes both.
Actually, I don’t think ADHD is a disorder at all. It is a different brain chemistry mix that helped early humans survive. My inside brain chemistry probably comes from those early humans 11,000 years ago who were hunters. Well, the world was taken over by the farmers of the world but some skills I have don’t fit into this world made by you farmers.
Good Luck
You’re not a physician, so it doesn’t really matter if you think an ailment exists. This is a discussion for your wife to have with a good doctor, and she should follow his/her advice. It’s irrelevant that people on the internet compare prescription stimulants to street drugs– fMRI scans of ADD brains show diminished activity in the frontal lobes, and certain stimulants help patients mitigate the symptoms of this brain activity imbalance. (fMRI = functional MRI, i.e. images of the brain doing certain types of work)
If she has ADD, she will probably not be able to make long term lifestyle choices without a prescription. If her doctor thinks she should try a medication, that’s what she should do. Medication is rarely a simple answer.
Or perhaps she’s depressed because her husband is overbearing and anti-science?
