Why do we need alternative health supplements?

If you enjoy good health and you eat a good diet, why would you need to take alternative health supplements? The fact that we live in today’s world with all it’s pollution and stress and other risk factors, not even a healthy diet is not enough to keep us in  the peak of health. We need to take quality nutritional supplements to give us that extra boost to deal with the pressures of living in today’s environment.

Most people think of alternative health supplements as vitamins and minerals and if you can get them all together in one convenient little pill, so much the better. The trouble is, we are not all alike and our nutritional needs are different too. Yes, a good multivitamin does help and may replace certain nutrients your body is lacking, but make sure you do your research and buy a quality brand.

What are the best alternative health supplements?

Everyone has their favorite supplement, but I think one of the most important is Omega 3. This is found in oily fish, but unless you eat fish every day, you’re probably not getting enough. The reason is our diet – the more Omega 6, or vegetable oils, we eat, the less Omega 3 we absorb. Omega 3 has a multitude of health benefits – too many to list here but I’ll mention just some. This magical oil can help with ADHD in children, dry skin, inflammation in the body and cardiovascular (heart) health. It is truly the “granddaddy” of alternative health supplements!

Whey protein deserves a mention here as an important nutritional supplement. Most people think it’s only for body-builders but whey protein can benefit us all. It’s a safe form of protein which is fat free and easily digestible. If you have a problem digesting meat, or you prefer not to eat it at all, whey protein is for you. It helps to maintain muscle in older people which is vital because we all lose muscle as we age.

The main problem a lot of us have is the bewildering array of  alternative health supplements in the marketplace. There are so many brands and so many products all promising so many different health benefits. You may feel overwhelmed and consequently end up doing nothing! There is also a big difference in the quality of products available. So how on earth can you work out what’s right for you?

Sometimes price can be a good indicator of quality. If  a product seems very inexpensive, it may be because it’s been manufactured using factory produced vitamins and chemical fillers. Quality  alternative health supplements made from whole food products tend to cost a bit more, but you will get a lot more nutrition for your dollar. Also a well known brand name that has stood the test of time may be another sign of a quality product.

A good idea when you’re starting out on the path to improving your health, is to visit a naturopath or natural health practitioner who can recommend the correct supplements tailored to your nutritional needs. These professionals are trained to take your health, lifestyle, age, diet and even blood group into consideration when giving health information.

If you can work out which alternative health supplements your body needs, you may never need a prescription medication again. Not just because supplements can take the place of curing diseases, but because you’ll probably never fall prey to those diseases in the first place. Good nutrition, lifestyle and the right alternative health supplements focus on wellness and allowing the body to heal itself.
