Why Should I Go To An Alternative Dentist?

Holistic dentistry as practised by an alternative dentist

There is a lot of controversy on the subject of whether to visit an alternative dentist or not. So what is holistic dentistry? A holistic dentist, or natural dentist considers the health of the individual instead of just focusing on the teeth. The basic principals of an alternative dentist is prevention and treatment of gum disease through good nutrition and oral care, the use of safe materials for all dental work and treatment of jaw misalignment (dental malocclusion).

Probably the most controversial of the above is the materials used in dental work including fillings and crowns. There are whose who believe that mercury fillings are safe at certain levels and that a mercury amalgam filling won’t harm your health in any way. An alternative dentist believes that all metal is toxic to the body and even the presence of gold, the most durable of metals can eventually dissolve and lodge in the body’s tissues.

Then there are still others who adopt a more middle of the road opinion, that mercury is safe while lodged firmly within the mouth, but the vapour caused by drilling can be inhaled and that is where the danger really lies.

We don’t really know who will eventually win this argument, but one thing is clear. If your dentist tells you that mercury and other metals do not cause problems, don’t bother arguing, just go elsewhere. This is because you can get safe alternatives to mercury for fillings at an alternative dentist. If at some time in the future mercury is deemed unsafe for filling teeth, then you’ve nothing to worry about.

Can an alternative dentist remove mercury fillings?

An alternative dentist may also advise you to have your existing mercury fillings removed. This is an expensive process and it is not without it’s drawbacks. As the old mercury is being removed, the process of drilling creates mercury vapour which pretty much everyone nowadays accepts as being toxic. If you do decide to have your mercury fillings removed, don’t have them all done at once. That would create too much mercury exposure in one sitting and a potential poisoning risk. Follow the advice of your alternative dentist as to timings of appointments.alternative dentist

If you’re an older person and you already have a mouth filled with mercury, should you be concerned? Here are a few of the symptoms of mercury toxicity: fearfulness, irritability, loss of self confidence, anxiety or nervousness, emotional instability, abnormal heart rhythm, unexplained elevated cholesterol, restlessness, fits of anger and the list goes on. If you have some or all of these plus a mouth full of mercury fillings, it’s possible you may have mercury poisoning, however the symptoms can have other causes, so it’s not cut and dried.

If you decide that an alternative dentist is for you, there are several who are currently operating in most states. One thing that puts a lot of people off is the concept that the materials used in holistic dentistry are not as strong or won’t last as long as their metal equivalents. This is just a myth however. Don’t be fooled by the argument that synthetic products are not as stable as metals. There are many people who wear non metal dentures and most who are apparently perfectly satisfied.

Check your local directory or look online for an alternative dentist near you.
